You could always try a self upgrade 😉
I’m Sleaford way though I’m afraid, don’t know anyone in East Lindsey – anyone? anyone?…
djriceModeratorHi BigBri5050,
welcome to the Lincs LUG website.
“Other” OSs are the way forward in my opinion, especially with the security concern that is Windows 10 (and now 7 & 8 as well).
It’s great that you’re thinking of investigating Linux as an alternative.
For your needs I’d take a look at Linux Mint, or Peppermint OS6. Both are great for beginners and not too much of a wrench from the Win XP experience.
Linux Mint Website
Peppermint WebsiteBoth will suit your needs, but I have to say that Linux and iTunes, as far as I know, don’t play well together. The app from Apple Inc. won’t run as there is no Linux version. There may be an alternative app that will talk to your Apple devices though, I’m not an expert and don’t own one so I can’t say for sure.
Are you looking to install Linux yourself or for someone to give you a hand?
Cheeers,
DJ
djriceModeratorHi Graham,
welcome to the LLUG! It’s still only small but I hang around here a bit 😉
Also welcome to the world of Linux, and only Linux 😉 I’m the same and ditched Windows a long time ago – it’s just not fit for purpose 🙂
enjoy using Mint 17 – it’s a great system and if you do have any problems just give us a shout!
Cheers

djriceModeratorI agree Mint is a superb distro, I had it on my main box and laptop for nearly a year!
I thought, though, after seeing Linux Help Guy’s videos on youtube to try Peppermint 6.
I tried a previous version and wasn’t too impressed but version 6 is fab – based on ubuntu 14.04 LTS, same as Mint Rebecca, it absolutely flies – especially on my i7!
Have a look at LHG’s vids – don’t mind the swearing – and see what you think!
Cheers
djriceModeratorHi Colin,
and welcome – glad you could join us!
djriceModeratorHi,
is your wife accessing it from the same Mint 17 machine but with her own account?
Did you set up the new machine from scratch?
I’m asking because there may be different permissions for a ‘Standard’ user in Mint 17 than in Ubuntu – or at least ‘Standard’ user permission groups may be different – more restrictive.
I’m not a NFS expert but it looks like the ‘Standard’ user defaults only give read permissions to NFS shares.
Any use?

djriceModeratorI’ve tried many, many distros over the years and have settled now for Linux Mint (Cinammon 64bit).
I still dabble with different Desktop Environments – XFCE is always a lightweight favourite!
I see that KDE 5.0 is out for testing, might be worth a look – but I haven’t liked KDE since version 4 – personal preference.
Mint, however, serves me extremely well and with that Ubuntu base I get all the stability and compatibility.
Oh, and I’m a convert to the Chromebook! Linux based and a treat to use!
djriceModeratorWell June has been and gone, with no fibre in Ruskington yet 🙁
The Openreach site is now saying September – oh well at least it’s still coming!!
cheers
djriceModeratorHi Gregg,
Welcome, I’m in Ruskington if you’re ever passing!
Cheers

djriceModeratorHi Richard,
welcome to the LUG!

djriceModeratorHi guys,
looks like we have a wide age range joining up! Excellent! Just shows what a wide appeal Linux has.
I use Mint 17 at the minute, I too had issues with ubuntu 14.04 – random crashes that I couldn’t nail down to report on. Sad, but Mint just seems to fly.
djriceModeratorWhere I am should get it by the end of this month (June 14) I’m only 200m from the cabinet so looking forward to speeds of upto 70mb/s – winner!! 😉
djriceModeratorI always ask as to whether hardware works with Linux! Just mentioning the name gets a mixture of looks!
I am converting people, one at a time, to Linux – especially Win XP users.
djriceModeratorHi Mick,
I’m also a Mint user – great system.
I do have CrunchBang on an older netbook – great distro too – and local 😉cheers
