I have recently upgraded to Linux Mint 17 ‘Rebecca’ which is a LTR (long term release) which will get regular software updates for the next 5 years.
Although I had previously loaded ‘Qiane’, the previous Mint release, I discovered that it had stopped uploading updates and on examination,it was ‘saucy’ updates which had stopped.
It was curious because these updates were from a past expired distro.
I am so confident and pleased with Linux Mint that it now is my main and sole OS.
I no longer run a dual boot with Windows. That shows a real vote in favour for open software.

I asked one firm who sniffily replied that they didn’t support ‘third party software’.
That was the end of that enquiry. On a hardware note, I get catalogues from Morgan Computers who sell overstocked and refurbished PCs etc. They are currently selling an HP Compaq DC7900 PC (minus monitor) for £89.95 with a 160GB Hard disk running Windows XP Professional. A superb buy to get a good spec desktop ready for you to either dual boot or replace with your favourite Linux distro right away. (Part code 44359A) Freephone 0800 008 7451. Apart from being a customer I have no link with this firm and am not being paid to place this item here.

Dave, I am using Mint 16 xfce on one laptop and Mint 17 Cinnamon and MATE on two others.
I downloaded the xfce RC distro onto a disc about a fortnight ago but now I see that they have released Mint 17 xfce more recently. What do the RC letters stand for? Was that a beta release? Talking on a general note I find the mint green colour scheme very pleasing and I have found a Spring green woodland photo for my desktop which looks very good with it.
Would you recommend me to burn a new disc with the xfce release now? Maybe there is an easier way to upgrade from Mint 16 xfce? Having uploads all the way through to 2019 is a very nice aspect of 17.

The broadband is fine for general use in Louth but isn’t always good with dealing with video in HD. Sometimes at night one can play a You Tube video at 1080 ips with no problems but generally in the day if you want no breaks or buffering then you need to stay at 480.
I use Plusnet which I believe is now a division of BT. Great price and service though.
I believe I have heard that we in Louth are going to have to wait to the final roll out of super fast broadband in the county, which was originally going to be next year.
I’m not a gamer so it’s not a problem. The BBC iPlayer usually works fine.
Although I heard a County Councillor point out that super fast had been already rolled out along the coast as a priority for holidaymakers, I find that each time I go to enjoy the sea at Huttoft and at Sutton that there is no wi-fi at all. No mobile phone calls to disturb you – some people might regard that as heaven! That’s my penny’worth folks.

    Hi David,
I see you noticed my promotion of a Linux Mint tutorial on G+.
Please excuse me for not writing sooner or visiting the group. G+ can be quite compulsive.
I enjoy photography, music and in my own small way anorak and geeky things so its a very nice site. I hope that the Linux Voice article will bring more of us out of the woodwork, so to speak. Don’t tell the magazine because for all that work they may be disappointed to know that I bought it on the magazine and bookstall on Louth market on Wednesdays for just £1. A good buy indeed. Hope this good summer is good for you both at work and relaxing in your down time. Thanks for the welcome. Richard.
